Stepping into a ballet studio for the first time can be an exciting yet unfamiliar experience for both children and their parents. At Inland Northwest Ballet (INB) in Spokane, WA, we strive to create a joyful, nurturing, and structured environment where your child can take their first steps into the magical world of ballet. Whether you're exploring our Creative Dance class or moving into our more structured programs, we aim to provide a stress-free experience for all involved. Here's what you can expect from your child's first ballet class at INB.
The First Time in a Ballet Studio: What to Expect
For many children, their first ballet class is their first introduction to a world that combines coordination, creativity, and discipline. At INB, we start welcoming children as young as 2.5 years old in our Giggles & Wiggles Class. In these classes, your child will be introduced to foundational gross motor skills all while fostering their creativity and love for movement.
Starting with Giggles and Wiggles
In our Giggles and Wiggles class, children learn how to dance and develop critical skills like spatial awareness, balance, and coordination. Classes are filled with lively music, fun props, and themes designed to captivate even the youngest dancers. This structured yet playful approach makes dance enjoyable while laying the groundwork for more formal ballet techniques later.
If your child is between the ages of 3 and 5, they will likely begin in our Creative Dance class, Giggle & Wiggles, which combines various dance styles to keep them engaged and excited about learning. As they grow older and gain more focus, they will be introduced to formal ballet techniques like plié (to bend) and tendue (to stretch) as they learn the language and discipline of ballet.
Preparing for the First Class: Dress Code and Studio Policies
At INB, class preparation is an important aspect of teaching discipline and respect for the art of dance. When your child steps into the studio, we want them to feel confident and ready for class.
Dress Code Essentials
We emphasize a clear dress code to help your child feel comfortable and prepared. For our youngest dancers in Giggles and Wiggles and Creative Dance, pink leotards, pink tights, and properly fitted ballet shoes are required. Hair should be neatly styled, with bangs clipped back or hair pulled into a bun, ensuring that nothing distracts them during class.
For older children participating in Ballet 1 and Up, the dress code includes black leotards, pink tights, and split-sole ballet shoes. Consistency in dancewear helps create a sense of focus and discipline, and it's important that students arrive in the appropriate attire each week.
For more information on our dress code and classes, check out our Class Schedule.
Studio Policies
We encourage parents to bring their child into the studio no more than five minutes before class time. For pick-up, when we release the dancers, we call them each by name and wait for a parent to come forward before we release them. For those observing in the lobby, please be mindful of noise, as it can disrupt the focus inside the studio. Siblings using electronics should keep devices on silent or use headphones.
Performance Opportunities
At INB, our dancers in Creative Dance and Older have the opportunity to perform. We understand how thrilling it is for children to show their progress, and our annual performance in June at the Myrtle Woldson Theater is a beautiful opportunity for them to shine. The chance to perform helps build confidence and allows families to celebrate their child's hard work and dedication.
The Joy of Dance and Developmental Benefits
Ballet is more than just physical movement—it's an opportunity for children to grow in ways that extend beyond the studio. As they learn to move gracefully, they also build social skills, teamwork, and patience. Each class fosters a sense of discipline, creativity, and focus, helping to nurture the whole child.
Life Skills Through Ballet
Ballet helps young dancers improve their coordination and balance while also teaching life skills like leadership and collaboration. Our classes are designed to help each child find their strengths, or as we like to call them, their "superpowers." Whether it’s rhythm, creativity, or confidence, we work to enhance these qualities in every dancer who joins us at INB.
